When it comes to storytelling in business, one of the groups most consistently interested in this topic is salespeople. I often get the question: What’s the right thing to say? Where do I start?

My advice: don’t start by saying anything. Start by listening. Listening tells you what the right thing to say is. And the right thing will almost always be a story — one that focuses their attention, sparks a shared cortisol response between you and them, creates a real connection, and speaks to their emotional centers, where the decision to buy actually happens.

So, what story do you tell? That’s where listening really matters. If you tell a story that focuses on what they want, you’ll do all right. But if you tell a story that taps into why they want it, you’ll do great.

For example: imagine you’re a realtor speaking with a young couple. You ask what they’re looking for, and they say: a house with a couple of bedrooms and a yard. Great. You can hop on MLS, start pulling listings, and set up viewings for the weekend.

But if you uncover why they want it — maybe because they’re starting a family, or dreaming of a place where kids can grow up — then you don’t need to talk about the transaction at all. In fact, you should leave the transaction behind and talk about childhood.

Talk about where you grew up. What it meant for your sense of self. How you experienced the world exploring Brooklyn streets, mountain trails, New England beaches, or wherever your roots are. Because when you tell that story, you connect directly to the heart of why they want what they want.

That’s how bigger deals and faster closes happen.

How do I use storytelling to drive sales?
